5 Stages of Child Development & Positive Parenting Tips

What is Child Development?

Child development is a process by which children build their physical development, social and emotional functioning, and cognitive capacity. Starting from the very basics, such as being able to recognize faces or making sounds, children learn how to make sense of their emotions and to struct complex connections in the world. Of course, a child’s brain development is also crucial to child development because cognitive, emotional, and executive skills depend heavily on brain functions.

The majority of children are observed to acquire certain abilities at almost the same ages unless disturbed by developmental disorders. Based on this, the experts divided child development into five stages. They also set specific abilities such as being able to walk or comprehend complex sentences as child development milestones. Children are expected to reach those milestones by certain ages and stages of child development.

Newborn Stage

The newborn stage is the first 2 months of life. At this stage of child development, newborns can react to sounds, watch people as they move, and calm down when spoken to or picked up.

For this reason, the newborn stage is considered to be the most important age for child development. Infant Stage

Children between 2 months and 1 year old are considered in their infant stage. At this stage, the physical child development continues rapidly: they start crawling around, sitting without support, and picking up objects. Also, children in this stage often put their hands and feet and other objects in their mouths.

Infants are capable of recognizing familiar faces and responding to their names. They try to communicate through gestures and imitating the sounds they hear. So, it is crucial for the parents to constantly talk to the children at this stage of child development.

Toddler Stage

The toddler stage covers the period between the first 1 year and 3 years of life. This age range is considered the fastest of the child development stages because toddlers physically grow at a drastic pace and become more and more adapted to social life. They are expected to be able to walk without any support, drink from an open cup (spilling only occasionally), and use a spoon and a fork by themselves during this period gradually.

In addition to physical child development, this stage comes forward as a period in which a child develops emotionally and socially. Socialising starts at this stage; children tend to move away from their parents but make sure they are present. They usually try to connect with their peers and join other children by copying the way they play with toys or each other. They show affection, notice when others are hurt or upset, and look at their parents’ faces to see how they react to a new situation. In short, they learn how to identify and process their emotions at this developmental stage. 

Preschool Stage

Children between 3 and 5 years old are referred to as preschool children. Physical child development heightens at this stage, and children’s motor skills become refined: they can throw and catch a ball, run, jump, and dress themselves.

Their social and cognitive skills also improve during this stage as they are introduced to a whole different world than their household. For example, they can differentiate between the wanted and unwanted behavior at certain places and change behavior based on where they are, such as libraries, playgrounds, and places of worship. Also, it is expected from a preschool child to be able to keep a conversation with more than three back and forth exchanges.

School-Age Stage

This stage of child development lasts between 6 and 17 years of age, which is the longest. During this stage, children advance their cognitive skills as they learn complex notions and various structures of knowledge at school. It’s more likely to improve short attention span at this stage of child development. This stage is also when children begin to form their own opinions and become independent.

Also, in terms of emotional capacity, they can identify complex emotions such as jealousy, love, hate, etc., and express their feelings through well-developed sentences and gestures. Children in this developmental stage are expected to be able to form meaningful friendships and connect with people on a social scale. They should maintain a regular sleep pattern, especially during this stage, because the effects of sleep on learning and physical child development as well as on emotional development are quite remarkable.

What are Developmental Milestones for Kids?

As explained above, there are five main stages of child development; each stage has several developmental milestones associated with it. Child developmental milestones can be defined as particular abilities a child is expected to acquire by a certain age group, such as walking for the first time, developing a sense of empathy, and many more.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) classifies child development milestones into the following four categories:

  • Social/Emotional Milestones: These milestones refer to the development of a child’s emotional capacity. It concerns whether a child shows several facial expressions, tries to understand how to react to new situations, notices others’ feelings, and tries to comfort them if they are hurt or upset.
  • Cognitive Milestones: Cognitive milestones are based on learning, thinking, and problem-solving skills children achieve according to their ages. These include identifying colors, looking for objects out of sight, figuring out how to open a lid, or showing simple problem-solving skills like standing on a stool to reach something.

  • Language/Communication Milestones: This category concerns communication skills and how children use language to express themselves. Making sounds other than crying, imitating the way others name things, reaching for objects they want, and enhancing vocabulary can be seen as examples.
  • Movement/Physical Development Milestones: Physical child development is about how children grow according to their ages and use motor skills and executive functions. For example: holding their head steady, standing on themselves, walking, drinking from a cup without spilling, using a spoon and fork properly, etc. 

New CDC Guidelines for Child Development Monitoring

To help track a child’s development stages and address possible developmental disabilities, The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) advises every child to get developmental screenings in their 9th, 18th, and 30th months. Additionally, the CDC and the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) updated their guidelines for child developmental milestone monitoring for the first time since 2004. This guideline aims to improve the early identification of children with autism and other developmental disabilities so that children and families can get help as early as possible. 

The CDC and AAP also included new milestones and open-ended questions. All the milestones reflect what 75% of children are expected to achieve by certain ages with this revision. It was only 50% in the previous guideline. So, if a child has not met a milestone, it is more likely to point to a developmental issue.

The following are the exercise recommendations:

These are recommended to be performed as a part of the 60 minutes of exercise (or more) per day on at least 3 days a week in moderate-to-vigorous intensity. For example, a toddler is suggested to have moderate physical activity like running around in a park, while an adolescent is more fit for vigorous physical activities such as playing sports games and swimming.

In addition to the benefits of physical activity, getting enough sleep influences child’s mental and physical health to a considerable extent. For example, growing children release growth hormones at maximum levels during the night’s sleep. So, sufficient sleep is one of the most important factors for a child’s physical health.

The American Academy of Sleep Medicine recommends that children between 6 to 12 years old get 9 to 12 hours of sleep per day while for those between 13 to 18 the recommended time for sleep is 8 to 10 hours. However, the data from Youth Risk Behavior Surveys show that about 6 out of 10 students do not get recommended amount of sleep for their age. This rate is even higher in high school students.

As the benefits of sleep on learning are also very remarkable, the parents may try improving the amount of sleep their children get. A sufficient amount of sleep during nighttime helps kids to stay concentrated and improves academic performance. What are the disadvantages of homeschooling?

  • Difficulty in maintaining an effective curriculum: Parents who have no teaching experience may fail to teach certain topics and invest too much time in learning a diverse curriculum, and eventually fall behind.
  • Decline in concentration and learning pace: This is an issue mostly seen in children with short attention span. In homeschooling, children are taught by parents who are probably less strict than teachers. The relaxedness may cause students to linger around a topic too much, to lose focus on the subject at hand. This may cause them to direct their attention towards something new and more interesting.
  • Demotivation: Homeschooled children are prone to feel lonely and lose track of their development as they usually do not have peers to compare themselves with. This may lead to a decrease in their motivation in learning. ONS claims that while 74% of parents say their children have lost motivation. It is also reported by 38% of British parents that their children are struggling to continue their education at home.
  • Lack of social interaction: If the child is not socialized via various social activities outside the home, they can get isolated and lonely due to the lack of communication with their peers. And this may cause adverse effects on their future lives as well.

What are the requirements for homeschooling?

Although homeschooling provides families a certain amount of freedom in organizing their children’s studies, it does not mean that there are no legal regulations. Homeschooling requirements and laws differ from one state to another in the USA. For example, some states require homeschooling students to be enrolled in a public school, while some do not but allow. On the other hand, some states prohibit homeschooling students from enrolling in public schools. 

Some states such as California, Indiana, and Texas require homeschooling to comply with the same law that applies to private schools.

Homeschooling in Texas is very simple in terms of laws. You are not required to notify the school district, or to have the same school year as public schools. You only have to use a written curriculum consisting of some state-mandated subjects like math, grammar, reading, etc. to legally homeschool your child.

On the other hand, for homeschooling in California, there are no assessment and immunization requirements like in Texas. Still, you have to notify the school district for your homeschooled child between 6-18 years old, and have to teach state-mandated subjects. Also, if you hire a private tutor, that person has to have a teaching qualification.

Here are the options to legally homeschool your child in California:

  • Establish a home-based private school
  • Enroll your child in a homeschooling program
  • Hire a private tutor

Likewise, homeschooling in Florida offers three options for children between 6-16: Homeschooling under the homeschool statute, under a private school program, or with a private tutor. There are no notification and assessment requirements except for the first option; no state-mandated subjects and teaching qualifications if the child is taught by the parents.    

However, these are only a few examples and should not be taken as legal advice as every country (or every state in the USA) has its own regulations and laws. So, we encourage you to contact your local associations and check your state’s regulations.

How much does homeschooling cost?

NHERI states that the amount of money paid from taxes for one publicly schooled student is $11,732 per year. But that is not the only expense for public school education as school supplies also cost a lot of money along with extracurricular activities. According to NFA (National Retail Federation), a typical family spent $849 on back-to-school shopping for the 2021 school year.

Private schools, on the other hand, can be even more expensive as their annual tuitions are $12.000 on average.

That is why homeschooling can be a better option for those on a budget. HSLDA estimates that an average family spends about $600 per year for a child on homeschooling curriculum, games, and books. Also, many online resources meet the needs of an average child for a small price, or even free. Homeschooling families can also meet via online groups and organize field trips to get bulk discounts on tickets for museums, zoos, important sites, etc.

  3. Assess the pros and cons of each solution. Now is the time to think of the possible outcomes of the solutions. Does it work for everyone involved? Is it easy to implement, and if not, is the effort worth the outcome?
  4. Decide on a solution. After carefully assessing each solution, pick the one that works the best. Here, you can start planning how the solution can be realized. What do you need to make it work? What are your backup solutions?
  5. Put it to test. Finally, you can implement the solution you have decided on. Observe how it plays out and discuss the results! Did it go as expected? What could be done differently? If the outcome does not match your expectations, try out other possible solutions or start the process again with the experience you gained on the first attempt.

Solving mazes is a fun, functional problem-solving activity suitable for all ages and levels. It encourages children to think three-dimensionally, engages their spatial and motor skills, and sense of direction. 

There are plenty of maze games you can find online with different levels of difficulty. You can make it more encouraging by putting rewards and prizes per completed maze. Gotta appreciate the hard work that the little ones put in!

Social Problem-Solving Skills Activities

Roleplaying

Write out different scenarios on small index cards describing a social problem. It could be about friendship problems, conflicts with family, or various situations at school, in the classroom, at lunch, in the park, etc. 

Then, ask your child to pick one and act it out together. You can switch roles to take it a step further. This will engage their imagination while improving social problem-solving skills and empathy and help them prepare for future social conflicts. 

Emotions in a Jar

Even as adults, we tend to struggle with strong and difficult emotions. It comes up as a challenge both as part of our relationship with ourselves and of our social relations with others. Emotional regulation is an essential skill that needs to be carefully nurtured at younger ages.

In this problem-solving activity, you will need some jars and different colored pom poms (or other kinds of soft material). Each jar will represent a certain emotion: anger, happiness, excitement, frustration, sadness, etc. You will then have them fill any jar they want with pom poms, according to how intensely they feel it. 

As they do it, talk about what these pom poms represent. Maybe they lost their favorite toy and want to put a handful of pom poms into the sadness jar. You can revisit the jars and ask if they would want to take away some of the contents over time. 

Coding games

Learning to code through games is a perfect way to develop problem-solving skills for children. It combines fun and challenges to create a motivating, fruitful learning opportunity. Through coding, children actively come across practical challenges and problems and come up with creative ways to overcome them.

Problem-Solving Activities for Kids in Groups

Group Building 

Divide children into teams of three. Build a random structure using materials you have at hand. One person will try to rebuild this structure without seeing it. One person will see the structure, but not be allowed to talk about it. Another person will be the “talker”. 

The “viewer” will describe the structure to the “talker”, without nonverbal communication. The talker will then describe what they understood about the structure to the builder. This is a great problem-solving activity for learning about conflict resolution through teamwork and collaboration.

Silent bench 

Have children line up on a bench (a line on the ground drawn with chalk). Now, ask them different questions and order themselves accordingly without speaking. For example, from lightest to darkest according to their eye colours. This will require them to communicate nonverbally and be careful to keep their balance and not fall off the bench while moving around the line!

You can gradually increase the difficulty by giving them cues that are hard to communicate without speaking to each other. It is nevertheless a fun exercise for everyone involved!
